“To own a vintage piece is like being part of its never-ending story. It is a … Style of Life”. That was a quote I found in Retro Boutique, a vintage store located in Hyde Park corner in Leeds.

Vintage clothing is defined as garments constructed from the 1920s to 1980s, otherwise retro is a term that refers to clothing imitating a particular style of a previous era.
Why vintage items are so fascinating? Why do people value them?
I was talking with Catherine, my flat mate who loves going to vintage fairs and look all of these vintage items such as clothes, purses, rings, pins, bracelets, furniture everything related with vintage.
She told me some reasons why an old item it’s much more interesting than a new one that you can buy in clothes chains, “I really love vintage items, there is a story behind them, they are not all the same, sometimes are better made than new ones” she said.
Own style
Identity as a part of a human nature has been attacked by fashion in a massive way, when people watch celebrities on the TV, some of them go and copy exactly the look of someone just because its famous and they might think something like: “so if she is famous the way she dresses its right”.
If I would start talking about right or wrong I would never end but the thing is that with mass productions sometimes you don’t take a chance to be more unique or inventive, which I consider is a really important thing.
Creativity while getting dressed
As Albert Einstein said “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” But what I really think is you need both to get a great result applying that to a lot of things we can even imagine, is when you take that knowledge and imagination and you explore that even more important thing, the creativity.
Living in a world where a lot of things had became fast and ready, when businessman try to save some money and made things with lower price but lower quality and there is a lot of consumerism, people goes for cheap and bad made things, every time is difficult to find nice things made by care and with high quality materials opposite to some vintage, antique and handmade ones.
Get into retro
I was talking with my professor Pam about my self- directed project, which actually is about retro-vintage fabrics and she suggest me to visit the Bird´s Yard boutique, located near to the Corn exchange in a very popular area where you can find a lot of different vintage and retro stores.
It is a very interesting 3-floor-building where you can find a lot of kinds of articles like clothes, shoes, and accessories and so on.
Knowing the milliner
While I was taking my photos for the Photo story module I met Melissa Dawson, who studied HNC millinery in Leeds College of Art and Design.
She works on the first floor in the Sighs and Whispers Boutique as milliner and dressmaker.
Her hats are just amazing, she make vintage inspired hats and vintage inspired children’s clothes and reproductions of vintage children’s clothes.
Some inspiration
Her 3 little children inspired her to do this task, “I love them to look like proper little girls, no sequence, no sparkly silly things just good old fashion floral print all the way!” she said, which I notice on her designs, there was those really pretty floral print dresses for little girls which were made of cotton fabrics and details like buttons in cherry shape and others.
Vintage inspired
One that took my attention was a dress with cute skulls, the fabric was just lovely and the combination of flowers and skulls was very unique.
The hats were so beautiful, the one I like the most was a beautiful 40s inspired hat with a big turquoise flower and brown and white feathers which I used in my fashion photo shoot project.
“I love the women look elegant and glamorous” she said, and when I looked at her hats I really saw those characteristics reflected on them.
The fashion photo shoot
After I saw that hat matched so good with the jumpsuit I chose for the vintage inspired photo shoot.
I asked my friend Mari Salmela, to be my model and she agreed immediately, she was so excited about the shooting because she has never being in one before although she is really pretty.
The styling process was great and we had a lot of fun doing it, she looked like a real lady from the 40s, so elegant, classy and pretty; totally a vintage girl.
So let’s get influenced by vintage clothes a little bit more, because vintage inspired style is so unique and wonderful!
